Party punch planning multiplies headcount by how many fluid ounces each guest drinks per hour, then by total party hours. Non-alcoholic Halloween punches often land at 6–10 oz per guest per hour when punch is the main beverage — lower if soda and water stations share the table.

The result is total fluid ounces before ice displacement — ice melts into the bowl and cups, so buy ingredients for the computed volume and keep backup concentrate chilled rather than diluting upfront.

Example: 20 guests at 8 oz per hour for a 2-hour party needs 320 fl oz — about 2.5 US gallons or roughly 9.5 liters. Scale oz per guest down for all-ages events with heavy candy consumption and small cups.

Batch in two waves — first bowl for arrival, second when the ladle runs low — so soda stays fizzy and dry-ice fog (if used) looks fresh. Premixing everything hours ahead leaves flat punch and melted ice that silently dilutes the recipe.

Cup size changes perceived volume: 9-oz cups filled to about 7 oz feel generous without forcing guests to top up constantly. Scale oz-per-guest down for all-ages parties with heavy candy and small cups; scale up for adult-only gatherings where punch is the only drink.

Dry-ice fog on top of punch looks dramatic but cools the surface and can leave guests sipping colder drinks — budget slightly more concentrate if fog runs the whole party. Keep a plain water or lemonade station so kids who dislike the main recipe still stay hydrated.
