Caramel coating for Halloween apples

Homemade caramel apples need enough cooked sugar (or soft-caramel recipe) to coat each fruit plus stick drip loss. Multiply apple count by your target grams of caramel per apple to get total coating weight, then divide by your recipe batch size to see how many stovetop batches to cook.

Forty grams per medium apple is a workable default for a thin even coat — thick candy shells or heavy nut rolls need more. Weigh one test apple on a kitchen scale after dipping to tune grams per apple for your recipe.

Example: 12 apples at 40 g each needs 480 g total caramel — two batches if each batch yields 400 g workable coating. Wrap count equals apple count for individual cellophane bags at the party table.

Dry apples thoroughly — surface moisture breaks caramel adhesion and causes sliding coats. Some orchards sell unwaxed fruit labeled for caramel apples; supermarket waxed apples may need a brief hot-water rinse and full dry before dipping.

Weigh one test apple after dipping to tune grams per apple for your recipe — thick nut rolls and double dips need more than the 40 g thin-coat default. Refrigerate briefly to set, then serve closer to room temperature so hard shells are less likely to crack teeth.

Work in small batches so caramel stays at dipping temperature; cold caramel slides off, and scorched caramel tastes bitter. Insert sticks before dipping, and let excess drip back into the pan for a few seconds to avoid puddles on the parchment.

Food safety: wash apples, inspect for bruises, and eat within a few days if you are not using commercial stabilizers. Double batches on wide pans risk hot spots — many home recipes intentionally cap batch yield; run the calculator twice when splitting salted and plain flavors.

Limits: does not include stick, nut, or chocolate drizzle weight — add those separately. Not a substitute for commercial food-production guidelines.

Common questions

How many grams of caramel per apple?

About 35–50 g per medium apple for a standard coat. Thick gourmet shells may need 60 g — dip one test apple and weigh.

Why do batches round up?

Partial batches are awkward on the stove — the calculator uses ceiling so you know to cook whole recipe multiples even if a little caramel remains.

Does this include toppings?

No — only coating caramel. Add crushed nuts, sprinkles, or chocolate weights separately if you mail-order supplies.
